Short Course season is here! Whether you’re a seasoned swimmer at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, or new to the pool, we’ve answered your questions below.
What is short course season?
Short course season is when our indoor pool turns into 25 metre mode to adapt for swimming competitions held over the winter. A lot of our squads are in training for 25m competitions, so keeping our indoor pool at this length ensures they’re training at their best for race day!
How will this affect members and their access to lap lanes?
While there will be lots of swimming competitions happening over winter (mostly on weekends), lap lanes will still be made available for members and the public to swim in each and every day. We encourage all swimmers to please check the lap lane availabilty page to avoid disappointment.
Will the outdoor pool still be open?
Yes! Our outdoor pool will remain at 50m and will stay open all winter long! While the days are cold, swimming in the outdoor pool in winter is an experience like no other.
Why does the indoor pool need to stay at 25m?
Due to the amount of squad training and competitions, it’s much more effective to leave the pool boom, or divider, at 25m, rather than changing it back and forth. This protects the equipment from wear and tear, and helps keep the pool open for longer, so we don’t have to close the pool for changeover.
How long is Short Course Season?
Short Course season begins on Friday 12 July, and will return to Long Course mode on Wednesday 25 September*.
