Deakin Melbourne Boomers are excited to unveil its inaugural Pride Game with the support of Pride Cup.
The Boomers will celebrate the game at our third Michele Timms Cup local derby versus Southside Flyers on Sunday, 21 January.
The Boomers are proud to be supporting the LGBTIQA+ community both on and off the court.
Deakin Melbourne Boomers Executive Chair Tony Hallam is extremely excited to host the Club’s first Pride Game event “We determined this season that we wanted to amplify our voice in our community for equality and inclusivity. This led us to hosting our inaugural Pride Game event and we are working with LGBTIQ+ community partners, like Pride Cup, to take respectful steps to educate ourselves on how to make the most of the opportunity.
“As an organisation we pride ourselves on our diversity and inclusion and equality in basketball is central to our vision. Sport plays a huge societal role in bringing people together and celebrating what a diverse society we live in. Our ambition is to reflect the Melbourne community and like many organisations we are a work in progress in authentic diversity and inclusion. This event is another step forward to celebrate the LGBTIQA+ community.”
Pride Cup CEO Hayley Conway says the partnership with the Melbourne Boomers is an important and meaningful initiative to make basketball more inclusive for the LGBTIQ+ community.
“Sport is for everyone. The Boomers hosting their first-ever PrideGame event is an important step towards a more inclusive game, for players and fans. Only 6% of young LGBTIQ+ people play team sports because of the culture that excludes them, the Boomers are playing their part to change basketball for the better, for everyone.”
Deakin Melbourne Boomers will host their inaugural Pride round on Sunday 21 January. Tickets can be purchased here.
