The Southside Flyers will create more basketball history in Melbourne with a special school holiday game at MSAC in Albert Park on Wednesday January 17 at 3:00pm.
The Flyers host Bendigo Spirit in Albert Park, the original home of basketball in Australia, in an afternoon game specifically for children and families.
“The Goat”, Australia’s greatest ever basketballer, Lauren Jackson, who will be in action for the Flyers, was joined at MSAC by the GOAT of Australian Men’s basketball, Andrew Gaze, to look at the facilities and reminisce about Australia’s rich basketball history.
“This is a great initiative to provide a special afternoon game during the school holidays to ensure children and families can attend. The Spirit are in good form, so it promises to be a great game,” Lauren said.
“Catching up with Andrew is always good fun and being at MSAC, near where the old Albert Park basketball stadium was, he was able to remind me about his young basketball days as well as talking about our journeys in the sport,” she added.
Andrew certainly enjoyed catching up with Lauren and is thrilled to see a national competition basketball game back in Albert Park.
“It is the other side of the lake to the old stadium, but it is Albert Park, and I am sure the fans will enjoy the game on Wednesday,” Andrew said.
In February last year the Flyers hosted a game at John Cain Arena and set a crowd record for a WNBL game. Once again, the Flyers are creating history by hosting a mid-week afternoon game at MSAC to promote the game and attract the younger crowd.
Flyers owner, Gerry Ryan, said taking the game to MSAC, and the timing, was all about further developing the game and ensuring everyone has access to see these world class athletes in action.
“The time of the game will ensure parents are comfortable for children to attend and, being at MSAC, I am sure many basketball parents will enjoy reminiscing about basketball at the old Albert Park stadium. For families it is an afternoon of entertainment during the holidays.”
